BIO

                                                                                             

Hafed Al-Ghwell is Senior Advisor at Maxwell Stamp Inc., the international economic firm, where he specializes in Middle East political economy issues and leads the global strategic communications practice. He is also Senior Advisor with Oxford Analytica, the well known global risk consultancy firm. Hafed also served from January 2015 to end of January 2016 as Senior Fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Hariri Center for the Middle East in Washington DC and currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors of the National Council on US – Libyan Relations, as well as a member of the Board of Directors of the consulting firm of NH & Associates. 

Hafed is a veteran commentator on the political economy of the Middle East and North Africa. His analyses are widely published in international media, including ABC News, BBC, DW, Al- Jazeera English and Arabic Channels,  Al Arabiya TV, NPR, PBS Front Line and NewsHour, Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, CCTV, RT, Washington Times, UPI, Newsweek, the National Newspaper, Gulf News, Washington Diplomat, among many others.

Hafed served for 16 years as permanent member of the Staff of the World Bank Group in various positions including as Advisor to the Dean of the Board of Executive Directors of the World Bank Group until end of 2015 when he took early retirment from the Bank. 

From 2009 to March 2012, he was a Strategy and Communications Advisor in the Office of the Vice President for the Middle East and North Africa and Program Coordinator in the Office of the Vice President of UN and External Affairs, also at the World Bank.

Hafed was Director of External Affairs and Communication at the Dubai School of Government, and part of the senior management team, from 2007 to 2009. He joined the Dubai School of Government, a partnership with the Harvard Kennedy School of government for the Arab World, now renamed as Mohamed Bin Rashid School of Government, on a secondment from his position as the Head of the Global network of Public Diplomacy, Information, and Communication Centers for the World Bank.

Prior to that, Hafed served as a Principle Associate at Foreign Reports Inc., the venerable advisory group on the politics of oil in Washington DC. until joining the World Bank in 1999. In the late 80's, upon graduation from the George Washington University, Hafed also served as a Junior Economist at the International Monetary Fund, focusing on monetary and exchange rate policy of the OPEC countries of the Middle Eat and North Africa.

Hafed holds a BA In Economics from the George Washington University, and completed many post graduate programs in Philosophy of Religion also at GWU. He also holds a Postgraduate Executive Certificate from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government in leadership and public policy, and a Postgraduate Executive Certificate from Stanford University in strategic communication, media and publishing. Hafed has also completed numerous executive training programs of the World Bank Group in management, strategy, economic development, and public policy and administration

Hafed is a dual US and Libyan citizen, and a permanent resident of Belgium. He is a long time resident of the Washington DC area in the United States.
